What Happens When You Send Emails to Invalid Addresses?

The complete breakdown of what invalid email addresses do to your sender reputation, deliverability, and domain — with a decision tree for what to do about it.

Short answer: The receiving mail server rejects the message, records a bounce, and your sending reputation with major ISPs takes a hit. Do this enough times and your future emails — even to valid addresses — start landing in spam.

Here’s the detailed version, because the short answer leaves out the parts that actually matter for operators running outreach at scale.


Not All “Invalid” Addresses Are the Same

The word “invalid” covers at least three distinct failure modes, and each one damages your reputation differently.

Hard Bounces (Permanent Failures)

A hard bounce happens when the recipient mail server definitively says the address does not exist. The SMTP response is typically 550 5.1.1 — “User unknown” or “Mailbox not found.”

What causes them:

  • The mailbox was deleted (person left the company, cancelled their account)
  • The address was never real (typo, fake signup, scraped/guessed)
  • The domain no longer exists

What happens to your sending reputation: Hard bounces are the most damaging bounce type. ISPs treat a high hard bounce rate as a strong signal that you’re sending to purchased, scraped, or unverified lists — behavior associated with spam. Gmail, Microsoft (Outlook/Hotmail), and Yahoo all track hard bounce rates per sending domain and IP. Sustained rates above 2% trigger automated reputation downgrades.

Soft Bounces (Temporary Failures)

A soft bounce means the address exists but the message couldn’t be delivered right now. Common causes: mailbox full, server temporarily unavailable, message too large.

What happens: Most ESPs will retry soft bounces 3–5 times over 48–72 hours. If delivery still fails after retries, the message is dropped. Soft bounces damage reputation less severely than hard bounces, but repeated soft bounces to the same address (across campaigns) eventually get treated as permanent failures by some systems.

Spam Traps

Spam traps are addresses that look like real email addresses but are operated by ISPs and anti-spam organizations specifically to identify senders with poor list hygiene. They never sign up for anything. If they’re receiving mail, that mail is unsolicited.

There are two types:

  • Pristine traps: Addresses created exclusively to catch spammers. They’ve never belonged to a real person and were never published as a place to send legitimate email. Getting a spam trap hit from a pristine address is a severe reputation signal.
  • Recycled traps: Addresses that used to belong to real people but were abandoned, deactivated, and then repurposed as traps after a dormancy period. These are more common and slightly less severe — but they still signal outdated, uncleaned lists.

You can’t tell if an address is a spam trap from the outside. Verification tools cannot identify them reliably either. The only protection is not sending to lists that include stale, purchased, or unengaged addresses.


What Actually Happens to Your Domain Reputation

The mechanism is less visible than the outcome, but understanding it changes how you think about list hygiene.

Step 1: Bounce recorded at receiving server
The receiving mail server logs the failure. If it’s a hard bounce, that failure is permanent — the server will reject all future attempts to that address from any sender.

Step 2: Your ESP records the bounce
Your sending platform (Apollo, Instantly, Mailshake, or your own SMTP setup) records the event against your sending domain and IP.

Step 3: ISP reputation signals update
Gmail, Microsoft, and Yahoo maintain sender reputation scores per domain and IP. These update in near-real-time. Hard bounces, spam trap hits, and spam complaints all feed negative signals into these scores.

Step 4: Future mail is affected
Once your reputation degrades, future emails — including to people who genuinely want to hear from you — get routed to spam or rejected before delivery. You’re not just failing to reach invalid addresses. You’re failing to reach valid ones.

Step 5: The feedback loop
Spam placement reduces engagement. Reduced engagement is itself a signal ISPs use to judge reputation. A domain that consistently lands in spam gets treated as more likely to land in spam — the reputation damage compounds.

Path 1: Verify Before Every Send

Run your list through an email verification service before each campaign. This catches hard bounces (invalid addresses) before they’re sent to, preventing the bounce event from occurring.

What this doesn’t handle: spam traps (traps can pass as valid), addresses that go stale between verification and send

Path 2: Maintain List Hygiene Continuously

Use engagement data to remove unresponsive contacts over time. Addresses that haven’t opened an email in 6 months get suppressed. Hard bounces get removed immediately after the first event.

What “Recovery” Looks Like If Your Reputation Is Already Damaged

If you’re already seeing degraded deliverability from previous sends to invalid addresses, the recovery path is:

  1. Stop sending to the damaged domain immediately. Don’t try to “power through” — every send while the domain is compromised deepens the problem.
  2. Clean your list aggressively. Verify everything. Remove invalid, disposable, and catch-all addresses for cold use.
  3. Warm the domain from scratch. Start with your most engaged contacts. Very low volume — 20–30 emails per day — for 2–4 weeks while reputation signals rebuild.
  4. Monitor Google Postmaster Tools. For Gmail recipients, Postmaster shows your domain reputation and spam rate. Use this as your recovery scorecard.
  5. Expect 4–8 weeks. Reputation recovery is slow. There’s no shortcut.

The cost of recovery is always higher than the cost of prevention.
