Free email verification is real. You don’t need to spend money to start cleaning your list — but you do need to understand what each free option actually does, where it breaks, and when it stops being enough.

This guide compares five approaches to bulk email verification at zero cost. We’ll be honest about what each one can and can’t do, including where our own free plan fits.

Does Free Verification Actually Work?

It depends on what you mean by “work.”

Free options split into two categories:

Syntax validation — checks whether the email address looks correct (has an @, has a valid domain format, no illegal characters). Completely free, no API needed, runs as a spreadsheet formula. Tells you nothing about whether the mailbox exists.

Live SMTP verification — connects to the mail server and asks “does this mailbox accept mail?” This is what actually predicts deliverability. Most tools offer a small free tier for this, then charge for volume.

For cold outreach or any campaign where a 3%+ bounce rate would cause platform issues: you need live SMTP verification. Syntax validation alone is not enough.

For simple form validation at signup: syntax checking is usually sufficient.

The 5 Free Options Compared

ZeroBounce free creditsLive SMTPNo100/mo freeVery high
Smart Email Verifier (free)Live SMTP via your providerYes50/day (~1,500/mo)Very high

Option 1: REGEXMATCH Formula (Google Sheets)

Cost: Free forever
Bulk support: Yes — drag the formula down your column
Accuracy: Syntax only

The formula:

=REGEXMATCH(A2, "^[a-zA-Z0-9._%+\-]+@[a-zA-Z0-9.\-]+\.[a-zA-Z]{2,}$")

Returns TRUE for format-valid addresses, FALSE for anything structurally broken.

What it catches: Missing @, invalid domain format, spaces, missing TLD.

What it misses: Whether the mailbox exists, whether the domain accepts mail, disposable email services, role addresses.

Choose this if:

  • You’re validating signups at a form level
  • You want to remove obviously garbage entries before a paid verification run
  • Deliverability precision doesn’t matter for this use case

Don’t use this if you’re doing cold outreach. A list that passes REGEXMATCH 100% can still bounce at 15%+.

Option 2: Hunter.io Free Plan

Cost: Free for 25 verifications/month (verification-only, not combined with their finder credits)
Bulk support: Limited — individual lookups through the UI or API
Accuracy: High (live SMTP check)

Hunter is primarily an email finder — a tool for discovering email addresses at a domain. Their verification feature is secondary to that core use case. It’s accurate, but the free plan is designed for light, individual lookups rather than bulk list cleaning.

What you do: Paste an address in the Hunter dashboard → click verify → see the result. Or use the API (25 requests/month free).

What you get: A deliverability status (Deliverable / Risky / Undeliverable), plus a confidence score and reason.

Choose this if:

  • You’re verifying a handful of addresses as you prospect — one at a time, not bulk
  • You already use Hunter for finding emails and want the verification bundled
  • Your volume stays under 25/month

Don’t use this if:

  • You have a list of more than 25 addresses to clean
  • You want results written back to Google Sheets automatically
  • Your workflow is spreadsheet-based

Option 3: NeverBounce Pay-As-You-Go

Cost: No subscription — pay per verification (from ~$0.003/email for small volumes)
Bulk support: Yes — CSV upload or API
Accuracy: Very high

NeverBounce doesn’t have a “free tier” in the traditional sense — but their pay-as-you-go pricing means you can start with as little as $10 and verify ~3,000 emails. You’re only paying for what you use, and there’s no monthly commitment.

What you do: Upload a CSV of emails → wait for results → download the results CSV → manually bring data back to Sheets.

What you get: Valid / Invalid / Catch-all / Disposable / Unknown statuses with detailed error codes.

Choose this if:

  • You have a one-time list cleanup (legacy CRM export, old prospect list)
  • You don’t mind the CSV export/import process
  • You want high accuracy and you’re okay paying a few dollars for it

Don’t use this if:

  • You need results inside Google Sheets without manual steps
  • You’re running verification regularly before each campaign

Option 4: ZeroBounce Free Credits

Cost: 100 free verifications per month, then pay-per-use
Bulk support: Yes — CSV upload or API
Accuracy: Very high

ZeroBounce offers 100 free checks per month, no credit card required on signup. Their accuracy is solid, and they also add extra data (geolocation, email activity score) on paid plans.

What you do: Create an account → go to Email Validation → upload CSV or paste addresses → download results.

What you get: Valid / Invalid / Catch-all / Abuse / DoNotMail / Unknown statuses.

Choose this if:

  • Your list is under 100 addresses per month
  • You want a reputable provider with a genuine free tier
  • You’re already evaluating ZeroBounce for a paid plan

Don’t use this if:

  • Your list exceeds 100/month consistently
  • You need it inside your Google Sheets workflow

Option 5: Smart Email Verifier (Free Plan)

Cost: Free with your own NeverBounce, ZeroBounce, or MillionVerifier API key
Bulk support: Yes — runs directly in Google Sheets
Monthly free limit: ~1,500/month (50/day)
Google Sheets native: Yes
Accuracy: Inherits from your chosen provider (very high)

This is the only option on this list that runs verification inside Google Sheets without requiring any export or import. You bring your own provider API key — the add-on connects it directly to your spreadsheet.

What you do:

  1. Install the add-on from Google Workspace Marketplace (free, no credit card)
  2. Add your API key from your chosen provider (NeverBounce, ZeroBounce, or MillionVerifier)
  3. Select the column with email addresses in your Sheet
  4. Click Verify — statuses appear in the next column automatically

What you get: Valid / Invalid / Catch-all / Disposable / Unknown — written directly into your Sheet.

Choose this if:

  • You work in Google Sheets and want verification without leaving it
  • You already have a NeverBounce, ZeroBounce, or MillionVerifier account (or want to use their free/paid credits through the add-on)
  • You’re verifying up to ~1,500 emails/month and want it to be part of your normal Sheets workflow

Don’t use this if:

  • You need to verify >1,500/month on the free tier (upgrade to the $79/year premium for 500/day)
  • You’re not using Google Sheets as your list management tool

The Honest Answer: When Free Stops Being Enough

Free verification works well for:

  • Lists under 1,500 emails/month
  • Teams with occasional campaign needs (not weekly)
  • Supplementing a paid provider you already use

Free verification breaks down when:

  • You’re running outreach weekly and lists change frequently
  • You’re managing multiple campaigns or multiple clients
  • Your bounce rate from “free-tier-verified” lists is still climbing (often means stale data — free limits force you to spread verification over weeks, by which time early addresses are outdated)

The upgrade threshold:

If you’re sending to more than 1,500 unique addresses per month and you’re doing cold outreach, a $79/year premium plan ($6.58/month) covers 500 verifications per day — enough for most growth-stage teams. The math usually works out to the tool paying for itself in avoided ESP penalties and saved campaign management time within the first month.
